South America cruise, Nov. 16, 2025 - Jan. 8, 2026
I was looking online for a future getaways and found a decent price on a very long Princess Cruise to many places we have not been before. I mentioned it to Lynn and she suprised me as she was onboard. I was thinking oceanview, but Lynn wanted a Balcony for this long cruise (so a little pricier than I thought).
Then while talking to Princess, George (from London) said they had a Princess promotion... Give them $15k (6k down, then $1k for 9 months), and within 18 months you get (need to use or book)... $12k future cruise credit (to go on this cruise), $600 onboard credit (to pay tips, excursions or whatever), then included we get two 2 -day, two 5-day vouchers for 4 or 5 star hotels that you only pay the tax. Also you get 4,000 Princess points to use on hotels. Lastly, they would bump us up from our platinum status to Elite status for the next two years (until Sept. 1 2026) which gives discounts on excursions, discounts on wifi, free laundry services, etc. We found out later they only bump one person to Elite, so Lynn will be and we will see how it works as a couple. They also put us on a list to possibly get a free upgrade from a balcony room to a balcony suite. I won't hold my breath for this, but it sure would be nice on this long of a trip and with almost half of the days being sea days or cruising around the horn or Antarctic Peninsula. This sounded good to Lynn, I was a little more hesitant, because it meant a $6k deposit and $1k per month from Oct. 2024-June 2025, versus a $200 deposit to start. We also need to make sure we use the hotel vouchers to get our moneys worth. So, we are booked on a 53 day South American cruise. We reserved Deck 11 - Baja, room B337 (a balcony room) for this cruise.
Princess now gives you three levels of reservation, standard, plus and premium. We booked standard, plus cost $6k more and included tips, WiFi and drinks. Tips would be (53 days x $34 = $1,802), WiFi multi devices, all cruise would be $1,192.50, $662.50 for one device. This is over $11 per day, per device which is crazy to me as I pay about $1.64 per day for cell and wifi combined at home. Drinks, up to 10 drinks per day (we don't drink much) so if we order 1 each per day (53 days x $10 per drink x 2 drinks) that might be $1,060. additional special meals (we don't do many of these) but say we did one specialty meal per week, that would be around (2 meals x 8 weeks x $55 per meal) $880. So the higher levels were not worth the money to us. We will skip the WiFi and do it on the port stops. We probably will skip the specialty dining as the regular meals are included. We will order drinks when we want and go to a specialy dining if the mood hits us. Tips of course you pay whatever level you book.
My main disappointment after looking into our Princess Loyalty levels and benefits is that they no longer (since 2019, I believe) give you any wifi minutes free. We use to get 150 or more free minutes on each cruise. Now you have to pay, and it is not inexpensive. Platinum and Elite get 50% off, but for a 53 day cruise like this, half off still cost around $1,250 for us to have wifi during this cruise. This bothers me and may sway me to book other cruise lines in the future.
Our longest previous cruise was 28 nights and we said we could have kept going. So, this cruise will be our longest and most expensive cruise. I hope we love it as much as past cruises and it will expose us to many locations (17), that we have never been to. Our price was $21,972, but we will try to watch incase there is a rate drop before final payment in July. Tips, airfare, excursions and trip insurance will be extra.
We booked through Costco and should get a $1585 gift card for booking with them. Final payment (approximately $9,972) will be due in July 2025.
This will be our 29, 30, 31st cruise (11/117 days on Princess (after this cruise), 10/120 days on Norwegian, 6/44 days on Carnival, 3/26 days on Royal Caribbean and 1/9 days on Celebrity) = 316 days of fun and relaxing cruising.
Ship
Sapphire Princess is an old ship, built in 2004. 2018 was the last time it was refurbished. The ship capacity is 2,670 passengers, 1,100 crew, it is 952 foot long and has a 121 foot beam. This will be a medium ships for us as we have mostly cruised on ships from 4,004 to 1,380 passengers, crews from 550 to 1,735.
Airfare and Parking
We used 18000 of my American Airline miles to book two tickets from Miami to Los Angeles on a very early flight, 6:11 am, Nov. 16. The flight only cost $11.10 after the air miles but we will need to be up very early to get to the airport and check in. Online bag check is $35 per bag (still to do).
We were looking for a cost effective way to get to and from the airport for this long cruise. Searching I found ParkSleepFly.com webpage and we booked parking at the enVision Hotel Miami International Airport (800) 531-9681, 7250 NW 11th St
Miami, FL 33126, which for $431.68 (we paid in full 5-13-25) we stay the night before our flight. They have free on demand shuttles to the airport and for this rate included parking until Jan. 9th.
The cruise ends Jan. 8th and on Feb. 12, 2024 we booked on American Airlines (EZE) from Buenos Aires, Argentina at 11:20 pm non-stop to Miami, arriving 6:30 am. I used 44k miles and it cost me $94.31, Lynn paid $973.21 and we sit across from each other in row 32C-Lynn, 32D-Jeff.
Insurance
Lynn already purchased Go Ready Travel Insurance from AEGIS for $396 which goes for one year and started March 30th, 2025 before our last cruise, so it is still good for this cruise. It covers items like: Trip Interruption, Airline Ticket Change Fee, Baggage Delay, Baggage / Personal Effects, Accidental Death, Emergency Accident and Emergency Sickness Medical Expense, Emergency Medical Evacuation, etc. Each with limits from $200 - $50,000.

Sunday, Nov. 16, 5pm
Up at 3am from our hotel in Miami. Noisy neighbors during the night kept us up some. Sleep, park and fly sent an uber to take us to the airport. We were in LA by 9:00 am and ubered to the ship by 10am. We waited upstairs until boarding about 1 pm. We ate and our luggage showed up within an couple hours and we unpacked. A couple sea days to start so we can settle in.

We walked around on our own, exploring the area. It was hot, 85 degrees and humid, so we stopped for a couple beers. I believe they said it was the sailfish capital of the world.

Lima (Callao), Peru, 2 days
Sunday, Nov. 30 - Monday, Dec. 1, 4am - 6pm
The port was very industrial so Princess bused us to the Indian Market about a half hour away. The first day our bus driver had trouble getting to the door as there was runner for a race. The market had very reasonable prices and you needed to negotiate. They also gave you a ticket to use the bathroom. Across the street was the Inka Plaza which was similiar. We joined up with Frank, Jen, Finley and Jean and took an uber into downtown Lima. Frank added us to a guruwalk which has a local give you a tour of the area, this one was called Historic Lima. This was very full day as we walked around 3.5 hours and then walked to the magic water circuit to watch the lighted fountains, etc. at night. After we all caught a uber back to Indian Market to catch the bus back to the ship. Around 65-74 degrees both days.

Monday, we took the bus back to the Indian Market then the six of us, went to Milaflores to walk along the Coastline. Then back to the Market to take the bus back.

Pisco (to Paracas then Ballestas Islands), Peru
Tuesday, Dec. 2, 7am - 5pm
Around 65-74 degrees today. got off the boat and found a tour for $90 for both of us to Ballestas Islands:
these islands, often called the "Poor Man's Galapagos," to see diverse marine life like sea lions, penguins, and various sea birds. A quick drive by our tour guide through the desert, to get us to Paracas and tickets to get on the boat to Ballestas Islands. We saw Humboldt penguins (endangered), blue footed boobies (birds), Inca terns and the mysterious ancient Nazca geoglyph carved into the desert from the boat as we went to the island. Pictures from bouncing boat, as you don't get on land.

We got off and found a good tour for $30 each taking us around for 5 hours. Part of the tour was walking the market, visiting the Archeological Museum, Cathederal and Park. Around 64-68 degrees today. A super moon started yesterday. It was a little wavy as we cruised when we left.

San Antonio, Chile, to Valparaiso, Chile by van, end of cruise 1
Saturday, Dec. 6, 5am - 6pm
Another tour starting in San Antonio and going to Vina Del Mar and Valparaiso. Found a $135 each tour for our 13 people with driver and tour guide. A lot of graffiti and street art. Ate at Renca, a shwarma and falafel with rice for Lynn. Was fast wifi upload at the restaurant which was nice as the Ryoko I was using to connect on shore was uploading slow. Lastly a stop at Emiliana winery tasting and picked up a few bottles to sail with us. Around 58-68 degrees today. It was a little wavy as we cruised.

Puerto Montt, Chile to Puerto Varas, Chile
Monday, Dec. 8, 7am - 5pm
Tender to shore. It was a little wavy on our way here last night, but not bad. Pictures from our excursion to Parque National Vicente Perez Rosales National park. We saw volcanoes, a nice river and Puerto Varas along Lake Llanquihue (2nd biggest lake in Chile). Around 56-64 degrees today. The local tour with Aguazul tours for $108 for the both of us to Park, Volcanoes and Valparaiso.

Puerto Chacabuco, Chile
Tuesday, Dec. 9, 10am - 8pm
Lynn caught a cold and I must have been fighting a virus as I got an eye sty. Lynn went for a massage to see if it would help and I explored on my own. It was a very remote and isolated town, and had a few small domes set up with local wears. It was sprinkling but I explored the small area on foot and I picked up a bottle of gato reserve wine (a local wine brand recommended by our guide in Valparaiso, Chile) in a little store. It was very inexpensive and when we tried it around a week later we both liked it.
Cruising to and from this remote village you saw fish farms in the waterway.

Amalia Glacier, Chile (Cruising)
Thursday, Dec. 11
It was around 52 degrees. Lynn had a vagal episode which freaked me out, but after she woke up, a wheelchair to the doctor and test, she was given the OK. She had been fighting a cold or virus for a few days and not eating much. It was a windy day and we did not see much of the Amalia Glacier (indicated as location 4 on the map) due to our doctor trip, but I had set up my camera for hyperlapse on our balcony before all this happened, so it captured a lot of what we missed, even the glacier chalving. I also threw in some pictures of a albatross bird I was taking pictures of the day before.

Beagle Channel and Glaciers
Friday, Dec. 12, 7am - 6pm
This day was suppose to be a tender stop at Punta Arenas, Chile, but was cancelled due to high winds (41 mph, 41 degrees).
The silver lining to this cancellation was that we got to go through the Beagle Channel and the glaciers during the daylight, on our way to Ushuaia, Argentina.

Ushuaia, Argentina (southern most big city)
Saturday, Dec. 13, Noon - 8pm
We booked a private tour in advance to explore Tierra del Fuego National Park, he offered a private 6 hours tour.
He told the history of this iconic city while on the way to the park. Our Tierra del Fuego National Park tour, included the main attractions of the park (Zaratiegui Bay, Acigami Lake, End of the Panamerican Highway, and Lapataia Bay) and a few walks while learning from the private tour guide.
The private shore tour included:
- Pick up / drop off by the gangway of your ship (it was very convenient)
- Private tour guide - driver
- Private transportation in an SUV
- National Park entrance fees
- Coffee break with pastry (they were good)
The total price of this private shore tour for 2 people on December 13, 2025 is 600 USD. If you find one or two more interested travelers, you should add 80 USD per person (we had four people, Carol who we met at dinner and Phillis from bridge, so $190 each). Tour: Nicolas J. Cape Horn (Cruising)
Sunday, Dec. 14
We were there at 7 am and it was 43 degrees. It was still far away so my pictures are magnified and blurry. I still had my eye issue but it was not bothering me much. It was 43 degrees. We went on the bow to see, but later the Captain turned the boat and it was a better/warmer view from our balcony. There was a smaller ship, closer and they had people going ashore on inflatables.

Port Stanley, Falkland Islands
Monday, Dec. 15, 8am - 6:30pm
We decided to due the hop on Hop off bus. It was $25 US per person. The first two stops had penguins: York Bay which was a 1.25 mile walk in sprinkles, about 45 degrees (each way from the bus stop), but we saw King, Gentoo and Magellenic Penguins there. Gypsy Cove was a very short walk from the bus stop and we saw more Magellenic penguins there.
After these two stops we stayed on the bus to stop 8 and went through the Dockyard museum which was very interesting. We walked back towards the tender pickup stopping at local stores along the way, including the Falkland Beerworks where we shared a beer and I bought a t-shirt.

Puerto Madryn, Argentina
Wednesday, Dec. 17, 7am - 5pm
We shopped around on shore and found a van excursion for $311 for both of us. Princess and other excursions were more to do the same thing (other vendors added charges to use a credit card, they were at a building on the left). It was a four hour ride (with stops to view animals) to Calets Valdes Penninsula in the eastern middle of the peninsula. We saw a lot of magellanic penguins at Pardelas (our first stop) a capybara (rabbit), a lot of guanacos (lama like), elephant sea lions, ostrich and donkeys. It was only a two hour ride back without stops. The roads were mainly gravel, but had been smoothed lately. It was around 50-60 degrees. There were very large jellyfish around the dock.

Montevideo, Uruguay
Saturday, Dec. 20, 8am - 8pm
We did a guruwalk.com tour that Frank and Jen signed us up for. It was interesting going around and seeing some of the cities historical sites. We went to the tomb of their founding father General Jose Gervasio Artigas (1764-1850), a pivotal military and political leader in the early 19th-century independence movements of the Rio de la Plata region, revered as Uruguay's national hero for his fight against Spanish rule and advocacy for federalism and popular sovereignty, despite dying in exile.
We were told that Uruguay came about as a way to settle fighting between Argentina and Brazil for the port, making it a neutral country for this major port. Right outside the port seemed to be a boat graveyard as around 10 ships were floundering.

Buenos Aires, Argentina, 3 days, end cruise 2
Sunday, Dec. 21 - Tuesday, Dec. 23, 8am - 4pm
Two thousand of our fellow passengers got off here (20 or 36 day cruise) and about 500 continued (53 day cruise). It was in the low 80s and the exchange rate was around $1 = 1,450 Argentine pesos.
We decided to go out and explore on foot. We had to walk a way to get to their subway system (the blue line). We wanted to see where we will be staying Jan. 8th. We took blue to the green line after one stop then rode until we were about six blocks from out hotel we will be staying for the day, in a couple weeks.
Later we paid for a three day hop on hop off bus to explore. We toured half the route and decided to get off as we had a night guruwalk with Frank and Jen. We stopped for pizza at Guerrin, and Lynn said hers was the best vegan pizza she had ever had. My pepperoni was also good, but neither one of us was able to eat more than half so we texted Frank and Jen to help as we were meeting close and soon for our guruwalk.
Second day we tried finding a post office (hard to do as they are getting away from paper mail) and then did the second half of our hop on hop off route to see the rest of the city on the bus.
Third day we

Punta Arenas, Chile, 1st time, since bad weather cancelled previously
Saturday, Dec. 27, 7am - 6pm
I booked an uber for the four of us (Frank and Jen) but it took us a while to find where to meet and Lynn slipped on wet pavement and skinned her knee while searching for the pickup spot. We went to the Nao Victoria Museum with replicas of the ships used to discover the area. The Strait of Magellan and Beagle Channel became ways to go around the horn without going through the Drake passage, which can be very dangerous, especially with the wooden sail ships and lack of technology back then. It was 41 degrees and a little goggy to start, windy and 55 degrees by 4pm.
The HMS Beagle was a Royal Navy survey ship famous for carrying Charles Darwin on its second global voyage (1831-1836), which provided the observations crucial for his theory of evolution; launched in 1820, it was a small brig originally designed for coastal patrol but was refitted for its scientific journeys, undertaking three major surveying expeditions before being sold for scrap in 1870.
Ernest Shackleton is famous for his incredible leadership and survival during the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-16) when his ship, the Endurance, was crushed by ice, leading to one of history's greatest tales of human endurance and teamwork as he ensured the safe return of all his men from Antarctica. He's renowned as a heroic figure from the "Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration" for his resolve, resourcefulness, and ability to keep his crew alive in the harshest conditions.
Timeline of the Endurance Expedition's Stranding:
-January 1915: The ship Endurance becomes trapped in Antarctic pack ice.
-October 1915: Shackleton orders the crew to abandon ship, setting up camp on the drifting ice.
-April 1916: The ice breaks up, and the men take to the lifeboats, eventually landing on remote Elephant Island.
-April - August 1916: Shackleton and five men sail the James Caird to South Georgia for rescue, leaving the rest stranded on Elephant Island.
-August 30, 1916: Shackleton returns with a Chilean tugboat and rescues all 28 men from Elephant Island, marking the end of their ordeal.
When we got back to town Lynn and I started exploring on our own. By the end of our day Lynn's ankle was very sore, so I got her ice and she put on a compression sock. Luckily she was good to go by the next day.

Beagle Channel's Glacier Alley of the Chilean Fjords, 2nd time through

Ushuaia, Argentina, 2nd time
Sunday, Dec. 28, Noon - 8pm
Our second time here we decided to walk around on our own. We went through downtown, popping in various souvenier shops and taking in the scenery. We both picked up a t-shirt (or two).

Drake Passage
We crossed the passage three different days (Dec. 14, Dec. 29 and Jan. 3rd). First on our way from Ushuaia, Argentina to the
Falkland Islands, second time on our way to Antarctica from Ushuaia and the last time from Antarctica to the Falkland Islands.
Some slides also show our proposed routes. We were very lucky as all three times through it was the Drake Lake, as opposed to the Drake Shake or Dragon.

Antarctic Peninsula (Cruising), 4 days
Tuesday, Dec. 30
We hadn't given this part of our trip a lot of thought but it turned out to be some of the highlights of our 53 day cruise. So many penguins, whales and beautiful scenery. Hard to not take tons of photos and videos. I may use up all my file space and have to pay for more storage but it is hard not to keep and share some of the images. These are displayed at 720 dpi so not as crisp as it could be but each of the four slide show below is over 300 megabytes.

Wednesday, Dec. 31
When I got up and looked out a iceberg with some penguins was floating by. We were close to the base camps of a few countries and later in the day had staff from Port Lockroy come visit us to give a presentation and also sell some fundraising items.

Thursday, Jan. 1
Thousands of penguins? There were a lot. Penguins, icebergs, whales repeat. This morning was snowy and foggy, then it cleared up. We passed three base camps for different countries today. Went to Admiralty Bay and it was 30 degrees and overcast. Some hyperlapse video where 30 seconds equals 15 minutes.

Friday, Jan. 2, last day here
To Point Wild, on the north coast of Elephant Island. It was named Cape Wild by the Shackleton Endurance expedition 1914-16 and for the leader of the party from Shackleton's shipwrecked expedition which camped and managed to survive on the point for four and a half mponths until they were rescued.

Port Stanley, Falkland Islands, 2nd time
Sunday, Jan. 4, 7am - 6:30pm
The second time here and we thought seeing the penguins the highlight so we planned on getting off early again and catching the hop on hop off for $25 each. We tendered soon as they started and then found out the hop on hop off didn't open for another hour. We found a man (Lacky) who had a sign for a tour and said he could take 6 and had a landrover. He said he guaranteed penguins and only charged $10. Our tablemates from the second half of the cruise were taking our lead and joined us with another couple. It was fogging with some sprinkles to start, as we bounced down some gravel and dirt roads to view the penguins.
Well, as the pictures will show we were not disappointed, seeing penguins fairly close up both times here. After two stops we had him drop us off by the museum and got a couple drinks before starting our walk back, checking out the sights and shops along the way.

Montevideo, Uruguay, 2nd time
Wednesday, Jan. 7, 9am - 6pm
Our second time here we walked across the peninsula and along the waterfront. We stopped at a McDonalds for a drink while Frank confirmed his flights and I checked on my stock purchase. We purchased Carnival and Norwegian stock to get stockholder benefits of onboard credits for future cruises with the two lines. Then we walked to the city center and went up the outside elevator which had Jen a little nervous. Their were great views of the city and after a few photos, and Lynn finding a purse maker's wears we headed back to the ship.

Buenos Aires, Argentina, again
Thursday, Jan. 8, 7am
The cruise ends Jan. 8th and on Feb. 12, 2024 we booked on American Airlines (EZE) from Buenos Aires, Argentina at 11:20 pm non-stop to Miami, arriving Jan. 9 at 6:30 am. I used 44k miles and it cost me $94.31, Lynn paid $973.21 and we sit across from each other in row 32C-Lynn, 32D-Jeff
We booked a later exit from the ship but then found out we needed to vacate our room by 8:30 am. We hanged around the lobby for around an hour and then made our way off the ship to gather our luggage and uber to our hotel. We were offered a $25 ride in the terminal, when outside and a taxi driver offered a $20 ride. I countered with a $10 ride and with the communication breakdown, I thought we agreed on $10, he thought $20, long and short it cost us $20 but he helped with out luggage getting to the car.
We checked in our hotel after about a 1.5 hour wait for a room to open up and then walked around the city, going to El Ateneo Grand Splendid (a beautiful book store in a renovated former theater). After walking around a while we went back to the hotel, rested up a while, then checked out and called an uber to the airport. The uber was a bit in need of maintenance, but it got us there.
Once in the airport and checking our luggage we went through multiple security checks. With plenty of time, we made our way in and waited or a gate to be assigned for our plane. We had dinner, charged our phones and eventually boarded with no issues.

Cruise activities
We got up early on sea days and went to the workout room. I did the treadmill (burning around 350 calories) and Lynn did weights and some eliptical or treadmill. Then came back showered and went to breakfast. I generally ate to much and Lynn had beans, potatoes, a tofu scramble they would make for her.
With all our walking and exercise I only gained 3 lbs. and Lynn lost a couple pounds.
On most sea days we would play bridge at 9 am and sometimes in the afternoon play cards with Frank and Jen Blues. There were good educational talks regarding our stops, the wildlife, Antarctica, Shackletion, Beagle Channel, Magellan Strait, etc. The shows at night we OK but we probably only went to half of them as we are not generally into magicians, etc. liking broadway type shows better.
